Janet bit her lip then gave a weak smile. "I'm forty three, a widow."

In the silence the waitress came and stood before them. "Can I help you folks?"

Janet shook her head.

Steve shifted on the seat. "Can you give us a moment?

"Sure." The waitress smiled as she moved away.

Janet felt emotions overwhelm her. Blindly she reached for her purse. She looked at the man beside her. "I'm sorry, this was a mistake." She began scooting across the other side of the booth toward the end. "I hated to have taken up your time."

"Janet, don't go." Steve put a hand out to stop her.

She shrank away from him and felt the first heat of tears sliding down her cheeks. "I have to go. I never should have come." She reached the edge of the seat and stood, "Thank you Steve, for being my knight in shining armor."

Even as she turned away, Janet heard the crunch of plastic as he stood. Two steps were all she managed before his hands grasped her shoulders turning her around. She couldn't look at him. Hot scalding tears spilled across her cheeks. Thankful that he said nothing, Janet grabbed the fullness of his shirt and pressed her face against his chest as his arms encircled her.

God, he smelled of heaven.
